Spam Patrol

Postby Joe » Thu Nov 22, 2012 9:59 am

Hello Users,

As you may have noticed over the past few days, the forum has as times been inundated with spam, spammers, and, indeed, spamming. This has all resulted from a series of spam bots who somehow where able to overcome our captcha and anti-bot question in the registration mode on 11/17 and 11/18. Since then no new spam bots have been able to make an account, due to changed security settings. However, when I first addressed the issue then, I mass deleted spam posts without recording the usernames they were from, meaning there were a few accounts I missed during the mass banning afterwards. The spam posts over the last few days have all be from these accounts I missed during the original spam barrage, and are not from new spam-bots getting through security. Hopefully, they have all now been taken care of, but chances are there are still a few lurking about, who will be dealt with in a whack-a-mole like fashion when they poke their heads out.

Thank you,
Yours Truly,
With all the love an internet admin can give,
Joe

P.S. Mako is a leaky kitty.

I don't remember how tight security is here ,but both a CAPTCHA and a simple question to answer during the registration process (like, "who was the composer for Star Wars?" is one I answered recently on a SW forum [go fig]) might help if those security measures aren't already in use. If that's not doing the trick, perhaps admin activation for accounts might be a good idea for the time being? I've seen it used other places before and even if it might not filter out every spambot it would certainly slow the infestation down a bit.

Yes, the key to breaking spam bots is to add something to registration that nobody else is using. Something you make up yourself. For instance, post a picture of an animal and ask the user to type in what animal they see. Or ask them to add the numbers seen on three separate images and divide by three. Creativity helps here.

If you want to do this ... you must edit the template in phpBB3 admin to add a new field to the registration page, and also edit the PHP source file for registration to check that value.

Many spammers will automate something used by 100+ boards. Few will do so for a script used by exactly one small board.

There are still human spammers out there, but it's a 500:1 ratio of bots that simply go after the easiest boards using stock Captchas and common, shared anti-bot scripts.

All these bots a still ones that registered in mid November. The updated security hasn't let any more through.

We'll call them the ghasts of inactivity.

New years resolution: post more crap (not literally of course, though perhaps metaphorically).
